Afghans & Knit Blankets, Knit & Crochet, My Patterns

Chunky Little Stripe

Here’s a free pattern for an easy baby blanket!  I’ve made it twice with great success.

You Will Need:

  • Skills:
    • Basic Knitting Skills: Cast on, Bind off, Knit
    • Color Change: At the beginning of the Color Change Row, Knit 1 using Yarn A and Yarn B, leaving a 6” tail of Yarn B.   Drop Yarn A.  With Yarn B and the Yarn B’s Tail, Knit until the tail runs out, and then continue with Yarn B alone.  This weaves in Yarn B’s tail as you are knitting.  Trim Yarn A, leaving a 6” tail to be woven in later.
  • Tools & Materials:
    • US 13 circular needle  (This pattern is worked flat, but I recommend using circular needles to keep the bulk of the project on your lap, instead of weighing on your arms.)
    • Scissors, soft tape measure, yarn needle for weaving in ends.
    • Materials:  6 skeins (5oz/81yd) of Super Bulky (6) yarn [2 skeins each of 3 colors].  (For the sample I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in Cincinnati Red, Pittsburgh Yellow, and Detroit Blue.)

For those of you who like it in colors, the Red/Yellow/Blue 36 row repeat goes:  [Red:  8 rows.  Yellow:  4 rows.  Blue:  8 rows.  Red:  4 rows.  Yellow:  8 rows:  Blue:  4 rows.]  This pattern repeats a total of five times.  The last 8 rows are worked in Red.

Here’s a closer look at the gauge:
