2018 CAL: “Beginner Blocks” December 2017

Yes, this is a 2018 Crochet-a-long, but I want to give Beginners a chance to practice basic stitches so that they are ready for the Easy blocks that will start in January!  More experienced crocheters can feel free to omit these blocks.

These are the squares I teach in my Intro Crochet Class for brand-new beginners.  They are part of the 2018 Vintage Vixen Crochet-a-long availabe on Ravelry Prequel Beginner Blocks

December “Beginner Blocks”:

Difficulty Level:  Beginner Beginner

Finished Block Size: 8″ x 8″

Gauge: 4 stitches x 4 rows = 1″ x 1″ (single crochet, front loop only)

Skills:  Chain, Single Crochet, Half-Double Crochet, Double Crochet.  See Basic Crochet Stitches for help.

You will need:

  • Crochet Hook H-8 (or size needed to obtain gauge)
  • Basic Yarn Sewing kit (small scissors, soft tape measure, yarn needle, and removable stitch markers)
  • Each block requires about 50g/70yds Worsted Weight Yarn (See 2018 CAL Yarns)

Beginner Block #1:  Single Crochet Square  Prequel Beginner Blocks

See Basic Crochet Stiches for help making the chain and single crochet (sc) stitch.

  • Foundation Chain:  Leaving a 6″ tail, chain 32.C
  • Row 1:  CH 1, SK 1.  In 3rd loop from hook, SC 1.  SC 30. (32 stitches)
  • Row 2:  CH 1, SK 1.  In 2nd stitch, SC 1 front loop only.  SC 30 front loop only. (32 stitches)
  • Rows 3-32:  Repeat Row 2.
  • Finish:  Fasten Off.  Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail.

Beginner Block # 2:  Half-Double Crochet Square  Prequel Beginner Blocks

See Basic Crochet Stiches for help making the half double crochet (hdc) stitch.

  • Foundation Chain:  Leaving a 6″ tail, chain 32.
  • Row 1:  CH 1, SK 1.  In 3rd loop from hook, SC 1.  SC 30. (32 stitches)
  • Row 2:  CH 2, SK 1.  In 2nd stitch, HDC 1 front loop only.  HDC 30 front loop only. (32 stitches)
  • Rows 3-22:  Repeat Row 2.
  • Finish:  Fasten Off.  Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail.

Beginner Block # 3:  Double Crochet Square  Prequel Beginner Blocks

See Basic Crochet Stiches for help making the double crochet (dc) stitch.

  • Foundation Chain:  Leaving a 6″ tail, chain 32.
  • Row 1:  CH 1, SK 1.  In 3rd loop from hook, SC 1.  SC 30. (32 stitches)
  • Row 2:  CH 3, SK 1.  In 2nd stitch, DC 1 front loop only.  DC 30 front loop only. (32 stitches)
  • Rows 3-18:  Repeat Row 2.
  • Finish:  Fasten Off.  Cut yarn, leaving a 6” tail.
